Economic and Gender Benefits from an Improved Water Supply in Semi-Arid Areas in Gujarat,India.
Year of publication: 2004
Joint research (IRC et al, 2001) by IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre (IRC), SEWA, and Foundation of Public Interest (FPI) confirmed that the time which has become availalbe because of an improved water supply enables women enterprise members to make a substantial contribution to the household income, especially at times when other income generating opportunities are absent, for instance, during drought. However, improving the water supply does not suffice but needs to be supported by favourable gender relations and the creation of economic opportunities through micro-enterprise development.
