Basins/Countries
The MUS project was carried out in eight countries in five major river basins: Bolivia and Colombia in the Andes, Ethiopia in the Nile basin, India and Nepal in the Indo-Gangetic basin, Thailand in the Mekong basin and South Africa and Zimbabwe in the Limpopo basin. Here you will find the Research Activities of the MUS project in different basins and countries.
Andean Basin
-
The Andes contained two research sites. In Bolivia, focus was on community-initiated water services in peri-urban areas of the Cochabamba valley, as well as on the support by a resource centre to these initiatives. The work in Colombia centered in the Quindio and Valle del Cauca departments around the de facto use of piped water supply systems for multiple purposes. All outputs are available in Spanish, with English summaries. Some key outputs have been translated into English.

The work in Nepal focused on the piloting of spring-fed hybrid systems in mountain communities. A learning alliance at different institutional levels was set up around these initiatives. In Maharashtra, an effort was undertaken to link mus development to a rural water supply programme.

Mekong Basin
-
MUS work in the Mekong basin was mostly carried out in the north-east of Thailand, which is a part of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). The work started with the identification of the existing multiple use water systems in farming communities, their benefits and economic impacts, based on the national development paradigm. The work focused on both up-scaling and out-scaling of multiple water use practices in north-east Thailand. The key approaches included learning alliance development and managing knowledge on sustainable water resource management at farm and household levels. The implementation included application of participatory action research methodologies with Local Wisdom Networks, Universities, Government and Non-government Organizations. Efforts were made to upscale multiple water use systems at the national policy level, through gradual changes in government plans, budgeting and practices.
